Why do you need a refit?

Superyachts are used intensively during the summer months. This all takes its toll on the state of the boat; inside as well as outside. And even though service in the winter months can help increase the lifespan of the yacht and prepare it for another summer, every once in a while the yacht needs an entire make-over; a refit. Not even the best yachts last forever without the neccesary maintenance. Temperature, vibration and maritime conditions all have their impact, even though this may not be visible from the outside. A refit project is therefore the perfect moment, to not just replace worn-out components, but also to calibrate performance according to the owner's wishes. A yacht's crew knows better than anyone whether the setuop of the yacht still meets the owner's needs.

Successful refits

The secret behind the many successful refits we performed is our smooth project development process, effective communication, tailored to the client's wishes and based on our extensive experience and knowledge.

What happens during a refit?

During a refit, the yacht gets a complete overhaul. Depending on the wishes of the owner or the state of the yacht, a refit usually is needed once per five years or once per decade. In some cases, a refit is needed for legal reasons. Jobs that are done during a refit are, for example;

  • Surveys of the boat (often for legal reasons)
  • Repainting
    • Antifouling
    • Hull
    • Superstructure¬†
  • Engine and machinery overhaul
    • Machinery
    • Electrics & Electronics
    • Hydraulics
  • Renovation and transformation
    • Interior design
    • Carpentry and joinery
  • Metal works, welding and fabrication

How can I give my generators a good refit?

At the heart of the boat, the engine room forms a crucial part of each refit. A refit is the ideal moment to reconsider and evaluate the current setup and search for improvements. Replacing both the engine and generators can bring the yacht back to live again and improve comfort, power and efficiency. Finding a product that matches the owners wishes and demands is therefore absolutely crucial to complete a succesful refit. But where to start? We've created a simple plan with 3 steps to help you find the perfect generators for your refit.

  • Step 1: Evaluate

There's no point in starting to look for a new generator set without knowing what you're looking for, or better: knowing what you're not looking for. Sit down with all those who have worked with the current generatorset or have an opinion about it and discuss what your current generator set is doing well and what needs improving. Is the generator set silent enough? Would you like it to include an after treatment system? Do you want to work with a hybrid setup in the future? What is the most important feature of the generator set? Discuss these points to get a good idea of what you need to change in the refit.

  • Step 2: Gather information

With a list of requirements which you'll have gathered after step 1, it is now time to have a first look around to see what's available on the market. Visit shows, talk to sales engineers and get to know each company and their products. Find out what they can do for you in terms of service (do they have a worldwide service network?), spare parts (are spare parts easy to order and widely available?) and versatility (can they also adapt their systems to fit your needs; can they provide after treatment systems or hybrid setups?).

  • Step 3: Decide

After understanding your own needs and wishes and knowing which products and companies are active in the market, you can now create a clear overview of all the possibilities. Hard to choose? Divide your wishes and demands into high priority ones and lower prioties. Look to find the perfect solution for your prorities first to help distinguish the key features of your new generator set.
